Twitter CEO Elon Musk caves to pressure from India and BLOCKS all Indian users from accessing links to BBC doc criticizing PM Narendra Modi
Elon Musk has caved in to pressure from India and removed a BBC documentary criticising PM Narendra Modi from Twitter. The two-part documentary, India: The Modi Question, has not been broadcast in India by the BBC, but the nation's federal government blocked it over the weekend and banned people from sharing clips on social media, citing emergency powers under its information technology [...]

EU To Force Crypto Companies To Report Their Users’ Holdings To Tax Authorities
The European Union indicated Thursday that it will make cryptocurrency companies report their European users’ holdings to tax authorities. The proposed eighth Directive on Administrative Cooperation was previously reported on by CoinDesk, and could have wide-reaching implications including forcing non-EU based companies to have to register with tax entities there. In a statement, the EU [...]

Amazon gave Ring video doorbell footage to police without a warrant or users’ consent
Amazon has admitted that it gave footage from its Ring cameras to police without being provided with a warrant or asking the user’s content. United States Senator Ed Markey wrote to Amazon in June asking about its relationship with the police department. The letter was prompted by a recent study conducted by Consumer Reports that found that once a Ring’s motion detectors had been triggered, [...]

Facebook is blocking links to the official class action claims page for a lawsuit settlement for users affected by privacy concerns. The page helps users receive their payout from Facebook and Facebook is marketing the page as “spam” or “abusive,” which prevents people from learning about how to claim. “If you are a person who, between April 22, 2010, and September 26, 2011, inclusive, were a [...]

Some thoughts on the Gab hack. First off, Andrew Torba seems like a well intentioned man and Gab seems like the least bad of centralized platform, at least in its intentions. The problem though, is that centralization is always the weak link.
It is the weak link with censorship. It is easy to pressure a centralized entity. It is easy to cut off their servers (Parler). Brian Acton of Whatsapp was a very well intentioned person who sold out his users for a few billion dollars to far less well intentioned ones.
But centralization is also very horrible for security. No matter how much effort you put into security, the stash of all that data sitting on central servers is going to be breached sooner or later. And in the case of an overstretched entity like Gab, under attack from everywhere, the breach happened sooner. But that is not their fault. It is just that in the centralized paradigm your passwords and personal data is stored in one big place. If it is not breached from outside, it will be sold from inside.

And here we get to the main driving force behind Pocketnet. There are simply no centralized servers to breach. Each user has their own private keys, they are not stored in one central place.
There are no central servers requiring Amazon's AWS computing power, they can go to hell, because our users run nodes that power the network. And with some recent releases notice that a decentralized network does not need to be slow. In fact, it is more scalable than centralized ones in some respects. And it can be faster than them.
You have made a right decision to join Pocketnet, because in the centralized world things will get hairier by the day. Even for well intentioned entities.

P.S. Over the next two months we are releasing a treasure trove of features. But we are also putting a huge focus on our referral program. Note that right now you will get a bonus of 20% of Pocketcoin earnings for anyone you invite over (and that does not mean they get any less). We have redone the way posts are shared. You can also go to your profile in the upper right and click Share. Share to your email contacts, your social networks contacts, everyone. We don't have VCs to power user acquisition, so this network will survive only if each one of your promotes it to friends. Onward in defense of freedom of communication!

    Dear Pocketpeople!
We have had a few choppy days with instability, but now everything is flying in the network again.
There were two reasons for the instability:
    1. Many nodes started syncing up at once which momentarily overwhlemend existing nodes' ability to support the network, This problem is not likely to repeat, because we have many nodes now and the network is that much stronger (originally there were only 11!).
    2. Nodes syncing up exposed a deep bug at the intersection of the blockchain and the social network code. Thank you to the core team, some of them did not sleep for 3 days looking for the problem and they did find it.

Pocketnet is built to handle millions of simultanous users even now in the beta state. so please invite all your friends, relatives, acquintances, enemies... If you invite them through your referral link, you will get a bonus in the amount of 20% of their PKOIN earnings through activities on the platform (get referral link in your profile by clicking Share/Copy).
We are in the final testing stages for the release of video uploading (bye youtube) and p2p messenger.
The question of survival of freedom of discourse is simply this: Is there enough people that are fed up with Big Tech and will take a stand by inviting everyone over to a decentralized alternative i.e. Pocketnet? The answer looks like Yes, but we all need to do much more to make that vision a reality. Inviting people makes us stronger and earns Pocketcoin for you. There will be many uses for the Pocketcoin on the network such as boosting posts, buying custom themes and stickers, paying for extra video storage, paying to subscribe to content a la Patreon etc. etc.

P.S. For node operators. Since Pocketcoin is a proof-of-stake currency, a mere running of the node will not automatically win rewards, you need some Pocketcoin in it. You can get some PKOIN at the Mercatox exchange. Email support@pocketnet.app if you cannot get it on Mercatox for some reason. We are trying to go through all the queries as fast as possible, but there may be some delay.

    Analysis: Necessary or draconian action?
    By Shayan Sardarizadeh, BBC Monitoring

For months, Parler has been one of the most popular social media platforms for right-wing users.

As major platforms began taking action against viral conspiracy theories, disinformation and the harassment of election workers and officials in the aftermath of the US presidential vote, the app became more popular with elements of the fringe far-right.

This turned the network into a right-wing echo chamber, almost entirely populated by users fixated on revealing examples of election fraud and posting messages in support of attempts to overturn the election outcome.

In the days preceding the Capitol riots, the tone of discussion on the app became significantly more violent, with some users openly discussing ways to stop the certification of Joe Biden's victory by Congress.

Unsubstantiated allegations and defamatory claims against a number of senior US figures such as Chief Justice John Roberts and Vice-President Mike Pence were rife on the app.

Google and Apple say they are taking necessary action to ensure violent rhetoric is not promoted on their platforms.

However, to those increasingly concerned about freedom of speech and expression on online platforms, it represents another example of draconian action by major tech companies which threatens internet freedom.

This is a debate which is certain to continue beyond the Trump presidency.
